CHARACTER NAME: Fox Alistair
CANON: RWBY
HISTORY: Wiki
Fox Alistair is a member of the Kenyte nomadic tribe from the deserts of Vacuo, a kingdom on the continent of Sanus. He was born blind and his parents and the tribe often treated him as if he could not do anything because of it. They were overprotective of him and would try to redirect him when he wanted to help and prove he could be useful to the tribe. There’s nothing worse than being useless in a tribe where everyone had to do their part for the group to survive.
While trying to build his own hut to prove to his parents that he could, a sinkhole opened up from beneath the sands and swallowed half of the settlement, including his parents’ home. As an orphan he felt he was alone, but not “really” alone, in that he had no parents but the tribe as a whole took to raising him. “Uncle” Copper especially took to looking after him and training him in how to fend for himself despite his disability. Then Copper was killed by a wandering lone outsider who wanted Copper’s belongings. The tribe caught the murderer and dealt with him themselves, but from then on, Fox shuffled around the tribe doing what he could and proving he could be useful, but he didn’t have another specific caretaker in the same way again. This is also around the time that his Semblance, or special ability awakened, and he found that he could sense the thoughts of those near him if they were loud enough and that he could create bonds to have two-way telepathic communication. He was also about to use his aura with his Semblance to allow him to sense and read the auras of those around him.
For all that this was the life that he had always known, Fox also wanted more. He didn’t want to have to worry about losing someone to one of the wild animals of the sand, or to a Grimm (monsters of darkness that are void of feeling or a soul for him to sense). He decided to leave Vacuo and go to Beacon Academy in the Kingdom of Vale, so he could train to become a Huntsman. At Beacon he partnered with Coco Adele during the First Year Initiation and then they were combined with Velvet Scarlatina and Yatsuhashi Daichi to make team CFVY (Coffee). They were the top team of the First Years and grew together to complement each other’s semblances and fighting styles. Fox created links with his team so he could speak to them telepathic and then project all thoughts among the group, so he never needed to speak out loud much. It makes people see him as a much more quiet and intense person than he really is.
By the time they were Second Years they had a celebrity status around the school. Then came the mission to Lower Cairn where they were supposed to search and extract and survivors from a very bad Grimm attack. When they got there, the whole village was demolished and they spent ten dies fighting and avoiding Grimm while looking for what survivors they could. They found a family of six and tried to get them out of an underground cavern they’d fallen into, but there were too many Grimm and they witnessed their deaths. Fox couldn’t sense them anymore and that was how they knew they were gone.
One of the professors came in and extracted them, but this mission sat heavy with them. Their first real failure to protect civilians. But this event also brought the team closer together as they all took responsibility for what happened and jumped to Velvet’s defense when they thought she was being solely blamed.
Only a month or so later, they would be caught in another devastating tragedy when Beacon Academy was attacked by both the White Fang, a group fighting for Faunus civil rights turned terrorist cult, and Cinder Fall, who was after the Fall Maiden’s powers. Their headmaster Ozpin was murdered by Cinder, many of their fellow students were killed by Grimm, and Beacon had to be abandoned along with a buffer area of Vale around it. Team CFVY stayed and helped defend Beacon and make it so civilians and students could be evacuated from the area, but eventually they knew they couldn’t stay and Professor Glynda Goodwitch encouraged them to go to Shade Academy in Vacuo. It took three months of traveling on foot to get to Shade, but they eventually made it and quickly rose through the ranks of that school as well, even though Shade has a more ruthless style where all students are expected to be out for themselves. Fox and his team stick together.
STRENGTHS:
Loyal : Once Fox has decided someone is his friend, he may tease them or even prank them, but he stays loyal to them. He doesn’t have a lot of close friends so he treasures the ones he does have, especially after growing up in a society where death and loss is so common among the sands. He’s awkward in new social situations, but if he warms up to you, he’ll stand by you. He'll also probably create a telepathic link right into your head without your permission because that's how he spells friendship.
Playful : Fox sees himself as the “comic relief” of his team, as Coco is the Too Cool Leader, Yatsu is rather serious, and Velvet can be very biting and snarky in her commentary when the mood hits her. He uses his telepathy to speak to his team directly, often sending them jokes and puns and other commentary he thinks will raise their spirits. He’s not afraid to pull pranks either, and often makes fun of his own blindness to make people he wants uncomfortable or to show his friends it’s an okay time to laugh.
Adaptable/Resourceful : Fox knows how to make thinks work for him. He grew up in the deserts of Vacuo where they were always on the move and did what he could to make himself useful to his tribe. He’s learned to work with his disability and uses his semblance and ability to sense auras to help him navigate the world around him. If something seems like it would be something he couldn’t do, he’ll find a way to prove you wrong. If he can’t use his semblance, he’ll use his assistive device, if he can’t use his assistive device, he’ll use the senses he does have. He’ll find a way to make it work for him.
FLAWS:
Socially Awkward : There were not a lot of other children his own age in his tribe and the ones there were tended to bully him which makes it hard for Fox to connect to other people at times. In new social situations he often leans on the people he does know or keeps himself a bit distant, which makes him come across as silent and intense. Often, it’s not that he’s not talking, it’s that he’s using his telepathy with his friends and thus doesn’t feel the need to speak out loud. If something comes up and he does speak verbally, his peculiar sense of humor and sarcasm often leave people thinking he’s a jerk. He’s also so used to life in Vacuo that he doesn’t always recognize when outsiders see their cultural beliefs and attitudes extreme or disturbing.
Brawler : Fox loves a good fight. He usually won’t initiate it, but if a fight it happening, he probably wants to be involved. There was a point when he didn’t bother to inform his team that mole crabs become disinterested in prey that aren’t moving much, and thus they spent hours fighting a family of them in the desert. When asked why he didn’t tell them, he admitted it was because it would be a waste of a good fight and testing their skills to tell them about such an easy out. Fighting and improving his strength is how he sees himself becoming a better Huntsman and so he’ll pick the harder route just because it’s more of a challenge…even if it’s not really best option to have picked.
Lack of Self-care : Fox will push himself to the limits even when he doesn’t need to. He uses his telepathy regularly throughout the day and overusing of semblance can eat at your aura, but to him it’s just easier to use telepathy than to talk to people out loud. He also can become overstimulated by the world around him when he’s trying to focus which can make it hard for him to extend his senses for navigating the world around him. When he’s on point, he’s great, but when he’s running himself ragged he doesn’t want to admit when he’s reached his limit. He’ll keep trying until his aura runs out and he can’t use his semblance anymore for a while.
CANON ABILITIES:
Telepathy : Fox’s semblance comes in two parts, one is the ability to create a two-way connection to people that allows him to send them his thoughts and to hear theirs in return. He can also use this to project his thoughts out to a group, so far the largest group he’s managed is around 120+ people. The secondary aspect of his Telepathy is the ability to sense a person’s mind. It allows him to use his telepathy as a sort of radar for sensing the people around him but it only has a certain amount of radius and that radius shrinks the more he wears himself out. For people and creatures like the Grimm there is an emptiness, a void, and they do not have souls and are creatures of pure negativity.
Enhanced Senses : Fox has honed his other senses due to his blindness, which gives him better hearing, a more discerning sense of touch, taste, and the ability to use his aura to sense the auras of others. He can even gauge the strength of a person’s aura by sensing it with his own.
Sharp Retribution : Bladed tonfas that he wears on his hands and wrists. They also have the ability to channel his aura/energy into a stronger attack, such as sharpening the blades of the tonfa or creating a stronger punch that causes a lot more damage.

AU BACKSTORY:
Part-Human/Part-Lycanthrope (called “Weres” by the Vacuans for ease of discussing various Lycanthropes as a whole) from nomadic tribes that stumbled their way into the desert wasteland of Vacuo in the Outlands. They managed to survive there for generations while also mixing with were-people and other beings of the Outlands as they moved around the desert called Vacuo, living as best they could. The people of Vacuo do what they can with what they have even while constantly on the move and being attacked by Grimm and other Outland beasts that want to kill them. Sure, they could probably leave Vacuo and return to some life on Earth, but they've been in Vacuo so long they don't really know another way to live. Because of how mixed the peoples of these tribes are, Fox doesn't actually know how much of him is human and how much of him is Lycanthrope of some kind and besides some slight reactions around the full-moon and enhanced senses, he doesn’t have any Were-traits. The tribes use weapons and tools with special minerals they mine when they can, that they then break down into a form called "Dust" that they use to perform spells and engrave their runes, but some of the people also have Candle abilities. Dust is also what has allowed the nomadic tribes of the Vacuo to survive as long as they have as Dust has strong protective properties when used in various forms.
Fox awoke his Candle ability when he was a child, not long after his parents were killed when a sinkhole caused by some burrowing Outlands beast took out half of their current settlement. He had Telepathy. He could reach out and bond with the people he cared about and felt close to, like his Uncle Copper who was not actually his biological uncle, but more an honorary one of the tribe who took care of him. Copper was killed by a rogue nomad thief, who was then caught by the people of their tribe, the Kenyte, and punished. From then on, Fox didn’t have a particular caretaker and was shuffled about the tribe as they raised him as a community. He was never alone, but couldn’t help the sense of loneliness he felt growing up. Being born blind meant that he couldn’t be as useful to the tribe as he wanted to be, because most of his tribe saw him as someone fragile who needed to be protected. He hated this and wanted to prove to them and himself that he was just as capable as anyone else.
After years of surviving and doing whatever he could to prove himself as a useful member of his tribe, Fox wanted something different for himself. He wanted to see the world and train himself to be even stronger so that he could better protect the Kenyte and other people from the true monsters of the Outlands. That’s when a group of hunters showed up to help defend his tribe from a large swarm of Grimm, distracting the monsters so the tribe could escape to the nearest settlement. Then Fox knew exactly what he wanted.
The hunters even offered to take him along with them when they left the Outlands and bring him to a school called Daybreak Academy. They said he could learn everything he needed to know there. He had been attending Daybreak for a couple years. This is also how he gained ADA a magitech assistive device that helps him to navigate when he's not using his powers to sense people. Then he left to seek out his tribe and see how they were doing in the two years he’d been gone, but considering how long it takes to travel to Vacuo and to find his tribe in the desert, it took him...a while to get back to school. Whoops.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Because of the fact that Fox wasn’t paired with a core group of people to be his team, he has a harder time letting his guard down now than he would have in canon. He’s awkward, but does talk more because he doesn’t have the connections that would make him comfortable with using telepathy with people. He tries to be friendly though, even if his humor is very off-color. Also around full moons he can become more aggressive, but in a playful way. Wanting to fight and spar and being more outgoing than he normally is outside of close friends.
RACE: Human hybrid.
SECRET SOCIETY: Vacuan Nomads are tribes of people who generations and generations ago were trapped into a storm and form their way through some gate or tear right into the Outlands. As time went on they survived as best they could, using whatever resources of the land they could (such as Dust), but also came across new people who would join the tribes, whether they be human, Were/Lycanthrope, Fae, or otherwise. The Vacuans are not judgmental. If you have the strength to survive in the desert, then you are welcome to join them. Everyone has a role and is important to the survival of the tribe, but they also accept that death is inevitable and could happen to anyone at any time. If the Grimm or other Outlands beasts don’t get them, the turbulent and ruthless sands themselves could take out a whole settlement in one swoop. They mourn deeply but quickly and then move on to continue living for the rest of the tribe. Fox is specifically of the Kenyte tribe of these nomads.
POWERS:
Telepathy : Candle power which give him the ability to create a two-way connection to people that allows him to send them his thoughts and to hear theirs in return. He can also use this to project his thoughts out to a group, so far the largest group he’s managed is around 120+ people. For people and creatures like the Grimm there is an emptiness, a void, and they do not have souls and are creatures of pure negativity.
Minor Were-enhanced Senses : Fox has some were-blood in his ancestry, but he couldn’t tell you which generation or how much. This gives him better hearing, a more discerning sense of touch, taste, and the ability to use his aura to sense the auras/energy of others. He can even gauge the strength of a person’s energy by sensing it with his own. He also becomes a bit more were-like in his attitude around the time of the full moon, but does not have a transformation.
Sharp Retribution : Bladed tonfas that he wears on his hands and wrists. They also have the ability to channel his aura/energy into a stronger attack, such as sharpening the blades of the tonfa or creating a stronger punch that causes a lot more damage.

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT
1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?
To become the best Hunter I can be.
2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?
Getting rid of monsters from the Outlands seems pretty self-explanatory.
3. DESCRIBE YOUR IDEA OF AN IDEAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.
Never been to school before this one, but it’s been doing just fine. Teachers, classes, missions, getting my work in one time, extended home visit notwithstanding… I like it here and I like how things are run here. At least I’ll never be bored to death.
4. WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SCHOOL TO OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?
Schooling? Buildings? This was a weird question the first time and turns out…it’s still weird.
5. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MOST LIMITS YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL?
Nothing. Limits only exist if you believe limits exist. If you want something hard enough, you’ll figure out a way to do it.
6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
Missions. I like the practical application of what we learn.
7. WHAT COURSE WORK DO YOU DETEST MOST? WHY?
I don’t take any of the magic and art courses for a reason. [Motions a hand to his own face.]
9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
…Eat? We’re supposed to do that in our free time right? And that sleeping thing.
11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
Nothing, but if they give me a fair shot, we’re good. If we’re on the same team for a mission, then we cooperate and work together.
14. IN THIS EVER-CHANGING WORLD, WHAT MOST EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE?
Life. I want to learn more, do more, and as long as you’re alive, you’ve got the chance to do that. My future is up to me. Just how I want it.
15. WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE DO YOU FEAR THE MOST?
What’s the point of being afraid? Something could happen, something might not. Vacuans believe in living your life planning for the worst but seeing the best options available. Don’t get yourself killed before you even started.
